What is your current position? How did you come to be in this position?
I currently have two nursing jobs. I work fulltime as a homecare
psychiatric nurse for a homecare agency. I also work partime as a
clinical reviewer.
What are your roles and responsibilities?
My role as a homecare psychiatric nurse is to provide nursing care to
mental health patients in their homes. The clinical review job
involves reviewing medical claims for workers’ compensation.
What is the most fulfilling aspect of your job?
I love the flexibility of my nursing positions. My employers allow me
to work from home.
What are the challenges of your current position?
I make 12 to 15 visits a day to patients’ homes, which involves a lot of
driving. The two nursing positions also involve a lot of paperwork,
which has to be completed within 48 hours.
What influenced you to go into nursing? What influenced you to choose
this specialty?
I chose the nursing profession after participating in community
volunteer work. I decided to work as a psychiatric nurse because of my
prior experience in working with people with mental health problems.
What degrees or certifications would you recommend a nursing school
student interested in your specialty?
I would advise a nursing student interested in becoming a psychiatric
nurse to take some psychology classes in order to understand various
psychiatric diagnoses. The student should also complete an RN degree
or diploma program.
What would you say to someone who is considering going into nursing?
In order to be a successful nurse, you have to be caring,compassionate
and also be comfortable with interacting with people.
What should someone graduating with a nursing degree expect in the
next few years?
There will be a high demand for nurses in the next few years.The
student nurse should therefore work hard and complete the RN program.
